Rent Receipt Generator for HRA Claims

Salaried employees claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption need rent receipts as proof of payment for their employer or, for self-filers, as supporting documentation. Fill in the tenant, landlord, rent, and property details below to generate a clean, printable rent receipt. The tool automatically flags when the landlord's PAN becomes mandatory (annual rent above ₹1,00,000) and when a revenue stamp is required for cash payments above ₹5,000.

Rules for HRA Rent Receipts

• Landlord PAN is mandatory when total rent paid in the financial year exceeds ₹1,00,000 (i.e. rent > ₹8,333/month).

• Cash payments above ₹5,000 per receipt require a ₹1 revenue stamp affixed by the landlord across the signature (Indian Stamp Act).

• Employers/AOs may ask for the rent agreement in addition to receipts for larger HRA claims — keep both on file.

How It Works

  1. 1

Enter tenant, landlord, and property details

Include the landlord's PAN if the annual rent will exceed ₹1,00,000 — this is a common employer requirement for larger HRA claims.

  2. 2

Select the rent period and payment mode

Choosing "Cash" for a rent above ₹5,000 automatically shows the revenue stamp requirement on the printable receipt.

  3. 3

    Print or save as PDF

Use the Print button to open your browser's print dialog — choose "Save as PDF" to download, or print directly for a physical signature.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a rent receipt mandatory for claiming HRA exemption?+
Yes. To claim House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption under Section 10(13A), most employers require monthly or periodic rent receipts as proof of rent payment, especially when annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000.
When is landlord PAN required on a rent receipt?+
As per CBDT guidance, if the total rent paid in a financial year exceeds ₹1,00,000 (roughly ₹8,333/month), the landlord's PAN must be furnished to the employer along with the rent receipts. If the landlord does not have a PAN, a signed declaration from the landlord is required instead.
Do I need a revenue stamp on a rent receipt?+
Under the Indian Stamp Act, a rent receipt for a cash payment exceeding ₹5,000 must have a ₹1 revenue stamp affixed, with the landlord's signature across it. This is not required for rent paid via bank transfer, UPI, or cheque.
Can I generate 12 months of receipts at once?+
This tool generates one receipt at a time so each can be reviewed and signed individually. For bulk generation across a full financial year, consult your CA or use payroll/HRA software that automates this for multiple employees.
What if I don't have a formal rent agreement?+
Rent receipts alone are usually accepted for smaller HRA claims, but employers and tax officers may ask for a rent agreement for larger claims or as additional proof during scrutiny. It is good practice to keep both on file.
